Description
|
This course begins
with an overview of the problems encountered on a daily basis by writers of
administrative documents and is then consolidated by individualised practice
and feedback.. The overview, in the form of a 2-day workshop, is
participative and the course content covers emails, letters, memoranda,
minutes of meetings and other UN-specific documents with consideration for
such aspects as useful tools and how to use them, layout, register/levels of
formality, set phrases, translation and lexical difficulties, grammar and
linking words. This course could be considered as an introduction or revision
of this subject. It is fast-paced and a lot is covered in the 2 days. In the
weeks following the workshop, participants will work on improving their own
documents and will receive on-line and face-to-face feedback. The course
below, Effective Office English, could be a useful follow-up to this training.

aimed at non-native English writers, but natives are welcome too.
|
Description
|
A modular course in written communication
for administrative writers working in a UN context. Different types of
documents including emails, letters, memoranda, minutes of meetings and other
UN-specific documents will be reviewed with a particular focus on presentation,
punctuation, spelling, appropriate register/levels of formality, grammar,
linking words, translation and lexical difficulties. We will refer to real UN
documents provided by the participants and set about diagnosing problems and
finding solutions to make texts more dynamic and effective using no more
words than are necessary. This course could be a useful follow-up to the
2-day workshop, Writing skills for administrative writers, described above.
|
Duration
|
Equivalent to a
24-hour course.

Writing skills for report writers
|
Target
audience
|
Post level 9 or
LPE, or persons working and writing mostly in English. Native or non-native English speakers.
Writers for the web, writers of reports, and writers of proposals and other
substantive documents at the United Nations and other agencies. A good plan
could be to start with this workshop + follow-up, have a break of six months
or so, and then do the Grammar and style workshops (see below).
|
Description
|
This course begins with an overview of the problems encountered on a
daily basis by writers of substantive documents and is then consolidated by
individualised practice and feedback.. The overview, in the form of a 2-day
workshop, aims to help you make your reports
clearer, more readable and concise through:
-
improving the layout and accessibility of the document
-
improving linguistic accuracy, style and tone
-
finding and using suitable tools and resources
In the workshop we
look at preparing to write, different approaches to writing and the document
as a whole. Along the way, we look
fleetingly at many grammar and style points, as well as punctuation and
lexical issues. We will work with real
examples from United Nations texts. It
could
be considered as an introduction or revision of this subject. It is
fast-paced and a lot is covered in the 2 days. In the weeks following the
workshop, participants will work on improving their own documents and will
receive on-line and face-to-face feedback.. You will also be asked to
submit an assignment and redraft it, based on the feedback you have received.
You will do a series of assignments in your own time and meet the tutor for a
private feedback session on your work. This course complements the Grammar and
style workshops.
